Zynga Announces Sugartown – its First Web3 Game and Platform
Imaginative game will be the first original Web3 game from major mobile game developer
San Mateo, CA – August 14, 2023 – Zynga Inc., a wholly-owned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) and a global leader in interactive entertainment, today announced the launch of its first Web3 game, Sugartown. The imaginative game is Zynga’s first Web3 title, making the company the first major mobile game developer to build a Web3 game from the ground up. Sugartown is built on the Ethereum network, which allows players to engage in an environment while earning rewards.
While developing a new game in their secret lair, three farm animals accidentally open a wormhole into Sugartown from another dimension, allowing strange beings to cross through. Characters known as Ora’s descend into Sugartown and immediately use their creativity to transform the unsuspecting city into a place of fun and games. Oras are the essence of lives players lose while gaming and, in-game, they are building the world so players can play. Players enter Sugartown by using their ERC-721 Ora token as proof of ownership, which will grant them access to Sugartown. Staking Oras will earn energy, which can be used to play Sugartown games to earn Sugar, an in-game currency that can be used to access more exciting rewards. Players will be able to begin minting Oras later this year – with the initial run of 10,000 Oras being free for players to mint. Players will be required to hold an Ora in order to access free-to-play minigames within Sugartown. Sugartown is a Web3 game that will evolve over time for Zynga’s community of holders and players.
“We’re excited to launch Sugartown both as Zynga’s first Web3 game and as the first new Web3 game with an original IP by a major mobile game developer,” said Zynga Vice President of Web3, Matt Wolf. “Zynga has always been on the forefront of innovation, and with Sugartown, our ambition is to empower players through a sustainable Web3 platform full of fun and enduring games. We created Sugartown to appeal to a native Web3 market but with the ambition of scaling much wider over time while we build a passionate and engaged community of holders we hope will enjoy this experience as much as we loved bringing it to life.”
“As Web3 rapidly grows and evolves, it’s challenging to keep up with the shifting regulatory landscape and ensure that game economies operate in an ethical, compliant manner,” said Catherine Mylinh, Chief Growth Officer at Forte. “Zyngaand Forte both share a commitment to robust compliance and proper licensing to create lasting, sustainable economic opportunities for the player community, and protect all parties involved in the ecosystem.”
Sugartown first appeared to the Web3 community through a strategic Twitter and Discord marketing campaign on January 25, 2023. As part of Zynga’s official announcement for the game, the Sugartown team will hold a Twitter Spaces conversation with Matt Wolf. Details of event are listed below.
